Is marshmallow fondant “paintable”? I’m making a wolf scene cake(birthday girl requested). I’m at a loss as to how to make the image as I normally would mold the cake or design features. She wants a layered sheet cake with strawberry buttercream and marshmallow fondant.

During this time of Covid birthday parties for my grandchildren have been not as “grand” as we’d like. This year I want to make a cake, with a mermaid theme so I am purchasing molds to create the decoration on top of the cake using fondant. I have NEVER done anything like this before so I plan on using this simple marshmellow recipe. My question is once prepared can I put it in the molds immediately?

The end of the recipe says to double wrap the fondant in order to store it. Do I need to store it, or can I color and use it right away? If I do need to store first, how long and where? Would it be overnight in the refrigerator, or 24 hours on the counter, etc.?

Hi Michelle, You can use it straight away or you can store it for later use. Double wrap and pop it in an airtight container. As long as it is fully sealed so it can’t dry out, you can store the fondant in the cupboard or pantry for around 4 weeks. Don’t store fondant in the fridge.

I usually use a double boiler since I don’t have a microwave oven and it works perfectly.

      Admin HowToCookThatAugust 18, 2016, 10:24 amReply

Hi Akaash, It should last well, even months BUT but if there has been any contamination during the preparation with mold or bacteria, from bench, bowl or board then this will start to show up in the finished product within a few weeks.

Urgent dilemma! Can you use marshmallow fondant like regular fondant? As in can you colour is the same and can you leave it to “set” the same for a few days if making things like say the dump truck or would it be better to make regular fondant? thank you in advance 🙂

      Admin HowToCookThatJanuary 14, 2016, 11:15 amReply

Hi Kate, It really depends how clean you have been in the cooking process as this fondant will pick up bits and pieces when making and these can cause mold growth if it is kept for too long. It is best to store it in the fridge. You can colour it just as you would normal fondant.

Hi, I made MMF and it didn’t turn out smooth. It was rough looking, it can stretch out well but when I put on the cake it cracked. I don’t know what did I do wrong. Please give me some advice. Thank you!

It sounds like the mix was a little dry, perhaps it dried out. You could try adding a small amount of water or a little more margarine to moisten the mix. If you leave any fondant out exposed to the air, it will dry out. It is important to cover it till you are ready to use it.

    PadmaAugust 19, 2015, 2:45 amReply

I am making marshmallow fondant and realizing that if I use all the sugar, it wants to crack and break and develop elephant skin; so I made another batch using about 12 ounces of powdered sugar with 8 oz of marshmallow. If I use this (or any softer) marshmallow fondant on a cake, what would happen? what are the downsides of such softer fondant?

    • Marshmallow Fondant Recipe for cake decorating - HowToCookThat :... (31)

      Admin HowToCookThatAugust 27, 2015, 9:56 amReply

Hi Padma, The fondant could be hard to roll out. The brand of marshmallows used can influence the texture of the mix. As longer as you are ableto comfortably work with it, it should be fine.

    • Marshmallow Fondant Recipe for cake decorating - HowToCookThat :... (33)

      Admin HowToCookThatAugust 20, 2015, 2:47 pmReply

Hi Monet, It will all depend on the size of your cake. Most quantities are more than sufficient to frost a standard 8inch double layer cake.
