The Medical Assistant/Certified Endoscope Reprocessor Technician (MA/CER Tech) is primarily a medical assistant who has expanded their role and knowledge to provide coverage and on-site support for the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes. The MA/CER Tech is required to obtain certification within the first year of employment and recertify as an endoscope technician annually through the completion of continuing education requirements. The MA/CER Tech will contribute to safe, quality and fiscally responsible cleaning of endoscopes per manufacturer and organizational instructions and adhere to all infection control policies at BIDMC.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs all duties of a medical assistant, which may include, but are not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, EKGs, phlebotomy, point of care testing, and assisting during routine procedures. Ensures that all patient care areas are clean, organized, stocked and ready for patient use. Facilitates timely flow of patients through the clinic. Prepares schedules, patient charts and other documents as needed for clinical activities, Escorts patients to ancillary service areas such as radiology and lab as needed. May answer and screen telephone calls.
  • Performs initial review of medication lists in the electronic medical record for final review by licensed practitioners. May retrieve schedule VI and over the counter medications only, under supervision of licensed providers; is not authorized to perform licensed personnel duties, which include but are not limited to drawing up medications, medication administration or flushing IVs.
    • Monitors, orders and/or maintains medical equipment and supplies needed for scope reprocessing, ensuring they are clean, sterilized, stocked and within expiration dates.
    • Reprocesses and disinfects equipment and supplies per protocol.
    • Conducts quality assurance measures and maintains QA documentation.
    • Transports equipment and supplies to and from CPD throughout the day as needed per infection control guidelines.
    • Maintains working knowledge of department and industry standards for equipment, processes and protocols.
    • Addresses damage/repair of instrumentation upon arrival into decontamination area and reports activities to supervisor/manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • MA, EMT, CNA or LNA certificate, or Associates Degree in Medical Assisting or at least 5 months of direct patient care experience in a clinical or research setting, such as: experience working as a medical assistant (MA), a patient care technician (PCT) or a clinical nursing assistant (CNA); nursing or medical student with completion of one clinical rotation.
  • CER certification within the 1st year of employment.
  • 1-3 yearsrelated work experience required.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be able to function in a fast pace environment.
  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of hospital, infection control and medical terminology.

Phlebotomy certificate.

Independence of Action:Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.

Written Communications:Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

Oral Communications:Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge:Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

Team Work:Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

Customer Service:Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Social/Environmental Requirements: Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Daily:Exposure to dust, gas, fumes, steam, chemicals - Chemicals,Protective equipment required (Respirator, earplugs, mask, gloves, eyewear, etc.).
  • Health Care Status:HCW1: Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.-Health Care Worker Status may vary by department
  • Sensory Requirements:Close work (paperwork, visual examination),Monitor Use,Visual monotony,Visual clarity <3 feet,Monitoring Equipment,Background Noise.
  • Physical Requirements: Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving. This job requires constantstanding,Fine Manipulation using both hands,Endurance-working up to 5-6 hours without a break, frequentwalking,Reaching-below shoulder height.There may be occasionalKeyboarduse,Reaching-above shoulder height.
