A few years ago, while loading the washing machine, I had a podcast on in the background that was about friendship. The expert being interviewed said, “Everyone should have at least five people they can call in the middle of the night case of an emergency.” With a self-satisfied smirk I thought to myself That is precisely why I had five children. But the expert continued… “And those emergency contacts cannot be members of your family.”Wait, what? I leaned against the washer and attenpted to summon the names of five people I wasn’t related to who would answer a call from me in the middle of the night. Today is National Only Child Day and as an only child, I think it’s a day to celebrate. In my essay on Substack about only children, I talked about growing up as an only child but also raising five children. I’ve seen both sides and I’m here to tell you - there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to raising only children. No modern research indicates only children are negatively affected by the absence of siblings.So if you’re an only child, or if you’re raising an only child, let’s celebrate today. Our medical establishment does not prioritize women. It was built by men, for men. And the needs of women have been largely ignored. It’s a system that deprives too many women of safe and effective treatments at a time in our lives when access to healthcare determines our lifespan.In order to fix the system, we have to become advocates for ourselves and other women; we have to demand our doctors understand the science and listen to their patients when treating our perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms.
